WWF Looks to Asian Tuna Sector in "Third Wave" Global Sustainability Drive

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is looking to encourage large Asian tuna fleets into fishery improvement projects (FIPs), after already getting 20 percent of the global catch engaged in its latest sustainability drive. WWF has six FIPs underway and two in the works as part of its Global FIP Alliance for Sustainable Tuna, or “G-FAST”, drive, which is the “third wave of sustainability that WWF has engaged in” in the sector, the NGO’s William Fox said. “WWF is actively recruiting more FIPs for G-FAST. Our focus is going to be on Asia, on Korea, Taiwan, China and Japan. We are going to try and work really hard with companies in those regions to get more engagement in FIPs,” he said, at the Infofish Tuna 2018 conference. The ultimate aim of G-FAST is to get the tuna fisheries involved meeting the MSC standard.
