US to Launch Carbon Offset Guidelines to Boost Integrity

The United States is set to release guidelines for the use of carbon offsets to ensure real emissions cuts and build market confidence. The guidelines will require that carbon credits represent real, additional, permanent emissions reductions, and that emissions accounting happens at the sectoral level. The announcement comes amid a debate about offsetting within the Science Based Targets initiative. The guidelines aim to mobilize the private sector and drive high-quality carbon markets to combat climate change.
