Sustainability will still be a challenge for the plantation industry, due to the new European Union (EU) deforestation law and scrutiny over labour practices, said RHB Investment Bank Berhad. The new law, which will come into effect in December 2024, will ban agricultural goods linked to deforestation and forest degradation from being sold in the EU. Planters will need to step up efforts to implement real-time digital traceability systems, collaborate on information using cloud technologies, and engage with regional government agencies or regulators to help the industry comply.
