Sibu aims to become a hub for bunkering facilities in Sarawak to supply green methanol to international shipping lines, leveraging on its shipbuilding industry's international success. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said at the SUPP Sibu Chinese New Year Open House 2024 that Sarawak will put more effort into producing green methanol amid global demands for sustainable energy. According to him, shipping companies today are changing engines that use oil to those that use green methanol to power their ships, to align with international bank loan approval requirements.
