Open Letter Calls on the EU to Include Carbon Removal in Net-zero Industry Act.

Several organizations, including the Carbon Business Council, Negative Emissions Platform, Carbon Gap, Openair Collective, and the Direct Air Capture Coalition, have signed an open letter to the European Parliament ITRE Committee. They are calling for the inclusion of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA) of the EU to help achieve Europe's net-zero goals. The letter highlights that the NZIA presents an opportunity to promote global climate ambition and support emerging technologies crucial for emissions reduction. It points out that the NZIA's text, as proposed by the Commission, does not include CDR technologies in the definition of net-zero technologies. The organizations argue that CDR is essential for reaching climate neutrality by 2050 and negative emissions thereafter, as emphasized in the IPCC's assessment report. The letter cautions against focusing solely on technologies with a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 8 or more, which could hinder innovation in carbon removal efforts. Instead, they suggest supporting lower-TRL technologies to shape the EU's trajectory in the coming years.
