Meeting 1.5C Warming Limit Hinges On Governments More Than Technology, Study Says
A new study published in Nature Climate Change emphasizes that the ability of governments to implement effective climate policies is crucial for limiting global warming to 1.5°C. While technological advancements like solar and wind energy have made climate neutrality feasible, the study highlights that political and institutional constraints significantly reduce the likelihood of achieving this target. The study finds that the most ambitious climate mitigation efforts give a 50% chance of keeping peak global warming below 1.6°C. However, when considering political feasibility, this probability drops to 5-45%. The research underscores that rapid increases in climate policy ambition by governments are essential to meet the Paris Agreement goals.
