Malaysia’s Turtles at Risk of Extinction Due to Climate Change
Malaysia’s turtles are facing a new threat from rising temperatures caused by climate change, with recent observations from Chagar Hutang, one of the country’s most important nesting sites, showing that very few males have hatched from nests in recent years. Turtle eggs laid in the sand are extremely sensitive to temperature, and a single degree in temperature change can shift the hatchling’s sex in one direction or another.
