Malaysia to Regulate Large Power Users, Sees USD20bn in Energy Savings by 2050

Malaysia's parliament has passed the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act, which will compel the country's largest energy consumers to implement power-saving measures. The law, which is part of Malaysia's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, will apply to large power users consuming over 21,600 gigajoules annually. Approximately 1,500 industrial consumers and around 500 commercial consumers will be affected. The legislation will require these entities to appoint registered energy managers to conduct energy audits and develop power management systems, promoting energy efficiency and conservation. Buildings larger than 8,000 square meters will also have to comply with energy efficiency requirements.
