Malaysia Steel Works Becomes Malaysia’s First ‘Ultra Low Carbon Emission’ Integrated Steel Mill

Malaysia Steel Works (KL) Bhd (Masteel) has become the first “ultra low carbon emission” integrated steel mill in Malaysia after being included in Bursa Malaysia's environmental, social, and governance (ESG) FTSE4Good Index Series. This was following a RM60 million investment in various carbon reduction initiatives meant to reduce emissions by approximately 7,300 tonnes. In a statement, the company said that its transition to new steel-making technologies allowed it to decrease its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 47 per cent from 2017 to 2021. Masteel aims to reduce emissions by a further 10 per cent by 2026, and 15 per cent by 2031.
