In conjunction with Labour Day (1 May), social and welfare organisations in Malaysia called for improved labour policies and legislation to protect workers, and said there must be serious consequences for senior management and directors of companies who breach these laws. Calistus Antony D’Angelus, international Labour advisor of the Social Protection Contributors’ Advisory Association Malaysia (SPCAAM), said the introduction of unemployment insurance and benefits, greater trade Union protection and tighter laws on employment termination should be done immediately.
