Japan, Kazakhstan Sign Carbon Offset Deal

Japan has signed a joint carbon offset agreement with Kazakhstan to promote low-carbon growth in Kazakhstan through investments and the application of advanced technologies. The agreement establishes a joint crediting mechanism (JCM) aimed at fostering the use of decarbonizing technologies, products, systems, services, and infrastructure in Kazakhstan. Verified carbon reductions or removals under the JCM can be quantified on an international basis and will contribute to Japan's nationally determined contributions (NDCs) while avoiding double counting. This marks Japan's 28th bilateral carbon offset agreement under the JCM scheme, and Tokyo aims to have 30 partner countries by 2025. The Tokyo Stock Exchange recently began national carbon credit trading to support Japan's net-zero emissions goal.
