Asia’s richest banker Uday Kotak believes robust corporate governance and integrity would help the Kotak Group cement its credentials as a banking powerhouse in the current decade, even as he anticipates consolidation in India’s financial and corporate landscape. In his two-page address to Kotak Group employees, Kotak noted that they “must meet the challenges and take this opportunity to strengthen its position as a credible, high-quality, high on integrity, and value-based player in the system”. Good governance and accountability were crucial for businesses to succeed and sustain, he said, and stated that these matter “whether it is a country or a company”. He urged the recognition that “freedom is not the right to do what one wants to do — it is the responsibility to do what one ought to do.”
