ICE To Launch CORSIA Carbon Credit Futures Market For Airlines Emissions
Intercontinental Exchange, Inc. (ICE) is planning to launch physically delivered futures contracts for carbon credits eligible for use in the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). CORSIA is a global carbon credit scheme aimed at reducing emissions from international aviation. ICE's futures contract will cover the first phase of CORSIA, from 2024 to 2026, and will include contracts for December 2024, December 2025, December 2026, and December 2027. These contracts will allow airline operators and other market participants to manage their exposure and offsetting obligations under CORSIA. Initially, the contract will support CORSIA-eligible carbon credits issued by the American Carbon Registry (ACR), with the possibility of including credits from Verra and Gold Standard in the future. The launch is planned for October 9, 2023, pending regulatory procedures. The contract will be part of ICE's global environmental portfolio, which includes major cap and trade markets worldwide.
