Better Understanding of Nature Capital Needed, Says Sabah’s Kitingan

Deputy Sabah chief minister Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan has blamed a misunderstanding of natural capital for the delay in the state’s implementation of a controversial carbon credit project. He said his ministry will need to educate critics who perceived the project as including mining and logging projects. In October 2021, the ministry signed a nature conservation agreement with Hoch Standard Pte Ltd, granting the latter monopoly rights over two million hectares of forest areas, including the Nuluhon Trusmadi forest reserve. The project has been put on hold due to indigenous rights concerns.
