Bayer, Genzero and Shell Team Up to Reduce Methane Emissions in Rice Cultivation

Bayer, in collaboration with GenZero and Shell Energy, is working to reduce methane emissions from rice cultivation. The project will provide training and support to smallholder farmers in India, promoting alternative wetting and drying techniques and direct seeding. This effort aims to address the significant methane emissions from paddy rice cultivation, which accounts for around 10% of global methane emissions. The collaboration plans to scale up the project to cover 25,000 hectares of rice cultivation in its first year, with potential benefits including greenhouse gas reduction, water savings, soil health improvement, and enhanced livelihoods for farmers. The International Rice Research Institute will provide scientific support for the project.
