A Study by the National University of Singapore That Predicts a Rise in Heat Stress-Related Economic Losses in Singapore by 2035

The study suggests that a 1°C increase in temperature could result in an alarming 88% increase in economic losses. Extreme heat costed Singapore US$882 million in 2018, with an 11% drop in productivity. The most concerning impact of heat stress is expected to be on worker productivity, with the construction sector likely to be hit the hardest. NUS researchers noted that heat stress has a greater impact on cognitive function than physical performance, with impaired decision-making putting workers at risk of injury. The study predicts a 14% decrease in worker productivity by the next decade, translating to an annual economic loss of US$1.68 billion by 2035.
