7 Countries That Shook Up the World in 2020

As governments around the world scrambled to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic, experts worried that the virus would put a spanner in the works for climate action. 2020 marked the fifth-year anniversary of the Paris Agreement, an international pact to limit global heating to no more than 2 degrees Celsius. Although the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference was postponed by a year, some countries have inspired and stepped forward with net zero ambitions. UN secretary general Antonio Guterres has also urged all countries to pursue a low-carbon recovery from Covid-19, and to declare a climate emergency to devote more resources to fight global warming and rising seas.
